Therapist in Paramus, New Jersey Edeline Elicin, LMFT

Edeline Elicin, LMFT

As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in both New Jersey and New York Edeline Elicin has made it her calling to help individuals, couples, and family in overcoming life adversities. Edeline Elicin received her Bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University- Newark in Psychology, Sociology and minoring in African American Studies. She continued her journey of higher education by attending Seton Hall University, studying in Marriage and Family Therapy with a concentration in Drug and Alcohol Counseling. Desiring to expand her knowledge on couple systems, Edeline has continued her studies at Widener University to specialize in Human Sexuality.

Edeline has always been intrigued in couple systems; the choice of two strangers who decide to spend the rest of their lives together and fighting through all odds to remain a unit. When conceptualizing relationships Edeline believes that individuals have experienced many factors in life, ranging from traumas to the most treasured memories that shaped their understanding of life. These two individuals, will have moments in which communication will not be verbalized properly; and that’s normal. What is not normal is when contempt and hatred is brought into the therapy room. My goal is to support my couples in whichever decision they choose to make in their marriage in the most healthy and amicable way.

Edeline has worked in various setting within the realm of mental health. She began her career as a counselor working in residential facility for behavioral adults with severe Axis 1 diagnoses ranging from schizophrenia to Bi- Polar disorders. Edeline has also worked with the incarceration population as a couples and family therapist. Within this location, she orchestrated reunification, aka Family Nights, in hope to lower the recidivism with familial and spousal supports. Edeline has also worked within the welfare population to assistance individual and families with social support systems, and her clinical work ranges from substance abuse groups, sex education workshops, healthy relationships seminars, Domestic Violence Survivors’ groups, anger management, private practice, and has sat on panels
discussing the importance of mental health and self-care. Edeline also has worked Clinical supervisor, assisting new clinicians with honing their crafts and learning the self of the therapist.

Edeline enjoys participating in speaking engagements and seminars to promote mental health, healthy relationship and communication skills. Edeline also loves to discuss the intersectionality of race, culture, and society and how it impacts a person’s mental health and self-esteem. Edeline believes our emotions dictate the way we view life and how we perceive others to be. We also use our emotions to keep others at bay and to protect ourselves. Understanding our underlined emotions and what happened in our past that made us react this way is a very important practice for me. “I believe in love. I believe that every life experience has brought us closer to the person we are today. Some may want to shy away from the hurtful/ painful times but I embrace it. Joy is never fully understood without sorrow, No heartbreak is more painful than once we experienced true love. Trauma doesn’t create victims, it simply creates survivors. And no sexual act is more orgasmic then when you truly love and accept yourself.”
