James Lentini, LSW
Life is a heroic endeavor with many obstacles along the way. Each of us experiences and responds to events in our lives using various coping behaviors; including activities that make us feel better and activities that make us feel worse. All of our behaviors develop because they were successful at keeping us alive through our experiences. Problems may arise when we continue using these safety behaviors—which are often developed during our childhood—throughout later phases of our life. These survival skills may have worked in the past, but now they are leading to problematic outcomes. I specialize in Addiction Studies to help adults and teenagers overcome destructive habits and replace them with healthy coping strategies. Addiction is not just about substance use. Anyone can struggle with addiction of any behavior including, but not limited to social media, video games, working out, sex, and fighting. Most people struggle with addictive or destructive tendencies which lead to repeating the same actions while wishing for different results. Working with someone who understands the gravity of addiction is helpful in discovering the void or need which is being filled by the safety behavior. Together we can explore how to redirect your energy towards behaviors that will leave you feeling whole. It’s not easy to make these changes, but it is possible. I became a therapist in order to help people process trauma, improve relationships, and modify their behaviors to orient their activity towards their desired outcomes. We will work together to strengthen your psychological flexibility so that you can respond, rather than react, when things go awry. These skills will optimize your productivity, relationships, and your health. You are the hero of your journey. You will uncover your own values and set your own goals. You will face many challenges along your path to personal growth. I will act as your guide to provide essential support and accountability as you progress along your path.
