Joseph Bishara, MD, MEd

Dr. Bishara is double board-certified in both General Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. He completed medical school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock. He completed residency and fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. Dr. Bishara’s master’s degree in education was also from Texas Tech. His bachelor’s degree was in film and video production from the College of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

He has used psychopharmacology and brief therapy to treat ADHD/ADD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Mood Disorders (Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder), Anxiety Disorders (including PTSD), and schizophrenia. He believes in working with educators, counselors, Applied Behavioral Analysis therapists, and others to achieve optimal functioning for his patients. He tries to take a wholistic approach to mental health, working with primary care providers when possible, in addressing medical problems which could be contributing to mental illness – such as sleep disorders, endocrine disorders, substance use disorders, and metabolic and nutritional deficiencies. Dr. Bishara encourages patients to make lifestyle changes to complement any prescribed medication and works with patients on visualizing and achieving personal goals.

Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Bishara was a teacher and multimedia producer. Dr. Bishara worked in film and video – his award-winning fictional short film highlighting mental illness was admitted to two festivals, and his educational video productions have won Addy awards. He worked as an educator in various arenas. He taught math and science in the primary setting and he also taught video production at a community college. He created educational multimedia for secondary and post-secondary education that is still being used to teach students across the country. He created healthcare-related material for print, websites, and video, including for the Texas Department of State Health Services, the Texas Alzheimer’s Research [and Care] Consortium, and the Children’s Advocacy Center of the South Plains. He also contributed to scholarly research articles and conducted data-gathering in the subject of mental health and cognitive decline in rural and frontier territories.

His hobbies include the arts: his original poetry has been published by the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society for physicians and he has produced original music highlighting mental health. He lives with his family.
