Therapist in McLean, Virginia, Kathy Matay, MA

Kathy Matay, MA

Kathy completed her master’s in counseling and psychotherapy with the Adler Graduate School and is pursuing licensure as an LPC. She has 15 years of experience as a certified parent educator with CHADD and the Parent Encouragement Program (PEP). She works with parents to adopt a positive discipline approach and provides tools and strategies to win cooperation and increase peacefulness and respect in the family.

Kathy applies neuroscience to help clients with emotional regulation and anger management to prevent disproportionate reactions. She works with clients to understand and embrace simple tools and practices to elevate outlook, relieve stress and reduce anxiety.

As an Adlerian practitioner, Kathy embraces a therapeutic approach that is both humanistic and goal oriented. Her approach prioritizes a client’s relationship to and connectedness with others and promotes positive movement. She brings empathy, positivity, and a strength-based focus to her collaboration with clients and works with them to align their emotional and cognitive state with their values. Her approach employs motivational interviewing to help clients achieve desired behavioral change.

Kathy is a trained crisis worker with previous experience at The Women’s Center and with the National Suicide Prevention Line.

At home Kathy spends time with her husband and three sons. She enjoys yoga, biking and hiking the trails along the Potomac River.
