Therapist in Emeryville, California Nancy Schulz, LMFT

Nancy Schulz, LMFT

Nancy Schulz is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California who has been practicing since 2008. She has a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from the School of Holistic Studies, John F. Kennedy University. Nancy believes that people want to improve their lives, but they may have stressors (including health), or messages they received from their families, school, or society, which have gotten in their way; and those feelings or patterns may have become entrenched. Nancy believes that babies come into the world whole, but that as they develop into children, and depending on their conditions and influences, may learn to reject parts of themselves, causing them to judge themselves and develop negative thinking patterns. This in turn can lead to depression, shame, or anxiety over time.

Like clouds blocking out the sun’s light in the sky, the buildup of life’s residues can affect self-perception and tarnish our image of ourselves; but in truth (like the sun), our unique spirit is still there, waiting to be rediscovered. Nancy believes that learning to accept themselves, connect with others, ask for assistance, and clarify and meet their needs can ease the pressures on them (including perfectionistic ideals). Nancy helps clients to explore or let go of the beliefs, feelings, and stories that are not serving them; to become more aware of the present moment (including positive feelings); and to grow in self-awareness and acceptance so that they can live authentic and hopefully fulfilling lives.

Clients’ perspectives may expand so that they can see themselves and others more clearly and kindly. Nancy is a Humanistic therapist who draws from various approaches including contemporary psychodynamic, existential – contemplative (mindfulness), and relational; who is trauma informed; and who sometimes uses Cognitive Behavioral tools and experiential – body-based information (which could include breathwork.) Nancy is accepting and warm. She helps clients hold their issues, pain, and joy; and listens to them compassionately, as they explore what may be getting in the way of what they want or with their progress.

She tries to take a holistic approach – which could include mindfulness or noticing signals in the body – if clients are open to this. Nancy also explores their resources, so that if hard issues or traumas arise, she can help bring them back to the present moment. Nancy believes that everyone has strengths and challenges, and that it helps people to be aware of theirs and allows them to be more flexible if they want to be (she is familiar with the Enneagram – if clients would like to use that language/perspective). Outside of work, Nancy enjoys music, drumming, movies, nature, and travel.
