Margaret Tormay, Psychiatrist

Margaret Tormay, MD

Margaret A. Tormay, MD Dr. Tormay has been practicing psychiatry for over 30 years. She was raised on the East coast, graduating from Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts and the University of Rochester School of Medicine in Rochester, New York. She moved to Chicago in1985 for her psychiatry Residency at the University of Illinois. Dr. Tormay’s practice of psychiatry has always been informed by the Biopsychosocial Model of wellness and medicine developed by psychiatrist, George Engel, at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. She had the great privilege of attending rounds with Dr. Engel during her medical training there, when he was then an Emeritus Professor, and learned first hand the vital interconnectedness of these three factors in patient care. She has worked in solo private practice for over 30 years. Over the last 10 years, she has had the privilege of working in a wide variety of settings with underserved populations, which is a passion of hers, including refugees, the homeless, inner city clinics and with the incarcerated in prison and jail settings. The essay, “The Care of the Patient”(1927), by renowned physician, Dr. Francis Peabody, has been the other guiding influence in her professional life: “One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.” Dr. Tormay will care for you, in her caring about you. Dr. Tormay’s spare time is devoted to family, the natural world–especially her lifelong passion for birds, gardening and native plants, culinary concoctions, and the wonderful world of everything canine.
