Dr. Cottrell provides psychotherapy, clinical evaluation and consultation for individuals 18 years of age and older. The emphasis of his work as a therapist is supporting individuals and families experiencing various mental health and psychological conditions. Though he works with a wide range of clients, he has a particular clinical interest and focus with "Twice-Exceptional" (2E) individuals experiencing ADHD and gifted intelligence. He utilizes a Systems, Solutions-Focused, and Strength-Based approach to therapy in addition to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Narrative Therapy, and Expressive Arts (especially with Music) as he collaborates with individuals and their families in order to embrace their interests and goals for their development, well-being, growth, and success.
Dr. Cottrell received his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from William James College. Upon graduation, he completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Pediatric Neuropsychology prior to joining Lifestance. He also completed an APA pre-doctoral internship at the North Shore Medical Center (Salem, MA). During that time, Dr. Cottrell's work included providing neuropsychological and psychological testing at Mass General for Children as well as providing behavioral health consultation services at the North Shore Physician’s Group at Union Hospital. Prior to doctoral training, Dr. Cottrell obtained his Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling and Human Development at Walsh University (North Canton, OH), and he has worked for over 12 years as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in a variety of settings including Private Practice, Hospitals, Community Mental Health, and College Counseling Centers. In addition to providing clinical care, Dr. Cottrell focuses on research and development for utilizing technology to improve mental health and executive function regulation through mobile/web based apps.
