Dr. Sidaros trained as a resident in psychiatry at the Ain Shams University Institute of Psychiatry in Cairo, Egypt, where he had graduated medical school. His volunteer work focused on refugees, including survivors of sexual trauma and torture. He moved to the United States in 2012 where he completed his second residency in psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. In residency, his clinical and academic interests included mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, LGBTQ+ mental health, as well as forensic assessments. He had the privilege of working with a diverse patient population, including combat veterans and 9/11 first responders. He served on the Editorial Board of the Residents’ Journal for the American Psychiatric Association. After residency, he began training at the Division of Law and Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine as a forensic psychiatry fellow. At Yale, he worked on a variety of cases including competency to stand trial assessments, asylum cases (including asylum claims based on LGBTQ+ status), and pre-sentencing assessment of mitigating factors.
After graduating from Yale, he was appointed as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale and began working with severely mentally ill patients in a forensic setting in Connecticut. He routinely participated in preparation of court reports, and testified under oath to the Superior Court, the Probate Court, as well as the Psychiatric Security Review Board. He has a special expertise in managing treatment-resistant mood, anxiety and psychotic disorders. He is double certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in general psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. Dr. Sidaros is also fluent in Arabic and French.
