Sheila Young Steinbrenner, PhD, APRN, PMHNP

Sheila Young Steinbrenner is a board certified psychiatric
mental health nurse practitioner. She has experience working in outpatient psychiatric settings with individuals experiencing a full range of psychiatric disorders in addition to co-occurring psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. In the past she worked as an RN in the chemical dependency psychiatric unit and in various other psychiatric units at the Ridge. She recently returned after working for about three years as a psychiatric nurse practitioner in Olympia, Washington. Sheila received her Master of Science in Nursing from Eastern Kentucky University. Prior to receiving her MSN she received a PhD in Nursing Science from the University of Louisville, and received her Bachelor in Nursing Science from University of Louisville. Sheila’s doctoral research focused on sexual violence and the impact it has on mental health and was conducted in South Africa with survivors of sexual, physical, and/or emotional trauma. She has published articles including a conceptual analysis regarding community violence, her doctoral research regarding help seeking after sexual violence, and co-authored an article focused on determinants of intimate partner violence in Sub-Saharan Africa. She is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society in 2008. Sheila works with individuals age 18-75. Her practice approach includes shared decision making and all her work is trauma informed. She has provided psychiatric care to a significant number of individuals who have experienced sexual, physical, and/or emotional trauma, and experience providing gender affirming care for those transitioning or post transition. She also has experience providing Medication Assisted Treatment of opiate use disorders with Suboxone, Subutex, and Vivitrol, along with naltrexone treatment for individuals in maintenance for alcohol abuse disorder. Her areas of specialty include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, ADHD, managing the mental health of autistic individuals, and complex-PTSD/PTSD and dissociative disorders including DID. Sheila respects and honors each person’s truths and histories and believes with the appropriate care an individual experiencing mental health difficulties can live a fulfilling, productive life.
