Ikram Hassan, PsyD
Therapeutic Approach: The presenting problem is the doorway for individuals, couples, and families to seek out services. My approach to treatment is collaborative and holistic (mind, body, spirit, and soul). I view human development and human experience as a complex interactive process that is understood in terms of relational dynamics at many levels of contextual understanding. My approach is recognizing that individuals and families are linked to the wider cultural contexts and shaped by socio-political and sociolinguistic realities. I have enjoyed the critical integration of theoretical models and learning to shift the focus from linear to circular causation.
I draw from a variety of approaches to fit the needs of my clients, including cognitive behavioral therapy, multicultural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, humanistic, somatic, dialectical behavioral therapy, emotion-focused, attachment-based, mindfulness through the cultural context, family systems, multicultural therapy, art, music and play therapy. I use a person-centered and strength-based approach to working with children, adults, caregivers, and families. I believe that everyday our lives can present us with challenges but also with opportunities to heal. There is a saying: “You do not have to teach a cut how to heal, you just have to create the best environment for healing to take place.” My goal is to create and foster a safe space for healing to take place.
Background: I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota. I received my master’s degree in Adlerian Psychology from Adler Graduate School in Minnesota and second master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Adler University in Chicago. My Doctorate in Clinical Psychology is from Adler University in Chicago. I completed my doctoral internship at Washburn Center for Children in Minneapolis. I completed my postdoctoral fellowship at Harbor -UCLA Medical Center. I completed additional fellowships at UCLA Medical Center in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disorders. I completed an additional fellowship at the University of Minnesota and University of Illinois Chicago in Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Maternal Childhood Health.
I have practiced in both urban and rural communities, with diverse populations in various settings ranging from private practice, community mental health, Veterans Hospitals, County Hospitals and Academic Medical Centers. In some settings, I have provided therapy and assessments to families and individuals in Somali and German.
