William (Cary) Lukens, LCSW

Cary graduated from John’s Hopkins in 1998 and went directly into a Masters in Social Work program at the University of Maryland. At the time of his graduation from the University of Maryland Cary was a member of the Honor Society with a 4.0 grade point average. His first of four challenging professional internships began during his undergraduate program in 1996 at the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital. Cary gained expertise in working with severe psychiatric concerns at the inpatient level learning crucial crisis management skills and effective interventions to increase stabilization and safety for his adult patients. In 1997 Cary began his second internship at the John’s Hopkins Infant Language Institute where he participated in research studies to support the development of language skills for young children. Both of these unique internships began Cary’s foundation for a diverse and broad-reaching clinical background with both adults and children. Once beginning his masters program Cary completed two internships spanning form 1999 to 2001 with the the Family Preservation Program through the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services and at Woodbourne Day School in Baltimore. In these programs Cary obtained rigorous clinical knowledge in the care and support of children and families. He obtained specialization with youth struggling with significant mental health challenges and the importance of an extended support network to facilitate healthy recovery. Cary’s proficiency in the treatment of mental disorders for both adults and children continued to grow once completing his education. During his employment at The Pathways Program for addictions treatment in Annapolis, Maryland Cary gained clinical experience working with men and women suffering from substance abuse disorders. His work with high-risk patients continued when beginning employment at the Crownsville Hospital Center in 2001 where he was a social worker on an adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit. In 2005, Cary provided therapeutic services and oversight for 28 chronically mentally ill patients living in supervised housing through Psychotherapeutic Treatment Services in Annapolis, Maryland. Each of these employment opportunities provided Cary with invaluable experiences serving a vulnerable and acute population demanding expert therapeutic skill, empathic attunement, and diverse interventions. Cary’s career in private practice beginning in 2006 has allowed him to further expand his clinical skill and applied knowledge to work with couples, families, and individuals struggling with a wide variety of issues. His current work with Argo Counseling and through Oasis Center for Mental Health is directed toward behavioral health treatment for clients of all ages, ethnicities, diagnosis, and backgrounds.
