William’s philosophy is based on the belief that each client has the ability to control his or her own destiny. He believes that each client has the resources to provide their own purpose, direction, and motivation in order to achieve happy and successful lives. He extends evidence-based treatments aimed at solving the client’s problems over stand-alone coping skills. His therapeutic approach includes cognitive and behavioral changes in addition to values based and existential therapies.

Background and Clinical Training
William Russell began working in private practice at Ascendant Behavioral Health in 2018. William has taught courses in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders and Psychopathologies at the University of Utah, College of Social Work, and conducted research at the National Center for Veterans Studies in suicide and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at the University of Utah.

William Russell earned his Master of Social Work degree at the University of Utah. He completed his internships at Jordan Valley West, inpatient unit; and, The Salt Lake City Veterans Medical Center, PTSD clinic. He is currently working on his dissertation for PhD, “Conceptualizing and Measuring Military Transitional Stress”.

Licensure & Affiliations
William Russell is Certified Social Worker in the State of Utah. He is a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT). He is professionally certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for trauma.
