What Is Depression?

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by persistently low moods that disrupt daily life. This condition not only impacts a person’s emotional state but can also lead to changes in their thoughts, behaviors, and feelings.

Signs and Symptoms of Depression

Symptoms of depression can vary wildly. For example, some people experiencing depression exhibit increased irritability, while others do not have the energy to get out of bed. Furthermore, one person’s symptoms may be more severe than another’s. Generally, a depression diagnosis may be appropriate if an individual exhibits at least five of the following symptoms:

  • Low or depressed mood daily
  • Intrusive thoughts about death or suicide
  • Feeling uninterested in activities they used to enjoy
  • Difficulty with concentrating or memory
  • Unintended weight loss or gain
  • Feeling guilty or worthless
  • Trouble with sleep
  • Fatigue or low energy levels

What are the Different Types of Depression?

Major depression, also known as clinical depression or Major Depressive Disorder, is a mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in activities that the person used to enjoy.

These feelings are severe and last for at least two weeks, affecting the person’s ability to function normally in their daily life. Symptoms may also include changes in appetite and sleep patterns, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, difficulty concentrating, and suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Major depression is a serious illness that can impact a person’s quality of life and ability to function.

Depression can also occur as a symptom with other mental health conditions. LifeStance’s mental health professionals will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

Depression Treatment Options

There are several types of depression, and some treatments are more suitable for some types than others. If you have depression, your mental help professional will seek to identify your type of depression during the screening process to help determine the best way to treat it.

In-person therapy is a form of mental health care that is provided face-to-face with a mental health professional. Until recently, this is what most people thought of when they pictured traditional therapy. LifeStance has hundreds of clinics offering in-person therapy appointments.

Online Treatment Options for Depression

When appropriate, online appointments can serve as an additional way for psychiatrists and therapists to provide mental health services to those who cannot come into their offices for in-person appointments. An online appointment is conducted online via your computer, phone, or tablet.
