Common Elements of LGBTQIA+ Evaluation and Treatment

Depression Screening & Evaluation
Depression screening is a standard set of questions used by psychiatric professionals to assess whether someone has depression. Screening tools for depression often consist of standardized questionnaires that assess different aspects of mental health, including mood, energy levels, sleep patterns, appetite, and concentration.

Depression screening is an essential tool for early detection and intervention, as it allows healthcare providers to identify individuals at risk and provide appropriate support and treatment.

Depression Treatments
Feeling low is a natural and common emotional response to life’s ups and downs, and it usually passes with time. However, if these feelings persist for an extended period or become more severe, it could be an indication of depression. When these signs persist for two weeks or more and significantly impact daily life, it’s essential to seek help from a mental health professional.

Upon receiving a diagnosis, the mental health professional can discuss various treatment options, including therapy, medication, or a combination of both. They will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

Anxiety Screening & Evaluation
An anxiety screening is a process that helps mental health professionals assess whether a patient has one or more anxiety disorders. Screenings can be done in-person or online and generally include a clinical interview and possibly some questionnaires.

As with depression screening, screening for anxiety helps providers identify at-risk individuals and allows for early detection and treatment.

Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is a therapeutic approach geared to identify and address the impact of any form of trauma or abuse on the lives of children, adolescents, and adults.

  • Trauma-informed care is designed to create a sense of safety in patients.
Creating a sense of safety increases the chances of people engaging with their treatment and being more willing to share their experiences with their healthcare providers.
  • TIC can help patients to actively avoid re-traumatization.
Re-traumatization can cause serious mental health problems, such as severe anxiety and clinical depression. Trauma-informed care actively works to avoid this.
  • TIC empowers the patient to feel that they are in control of their treatment.
Self-empowerment offers patients a better sense of control over their own lives, which is a critical feeling that they need to regain for themselves.
  • TIC can help develop healthy relationship and self-advocacy skills.
Traumatic experiences can affect the ability to trust and maintain appropriate limits and boundaries. TIC can help develop these skills.
  • TIC can be used to bring individuals with shared experiences together.
This level of peer support enables patients to feel part of something greater than themselves and helps them avoid feeling different from everyone else.
