Dr. Christine Calix earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Psychology in 1980. She has over 40 years of experience in a variety of clinical settings and has treated both adolescents and adults, conducting individual, group, couples and family therapy.

Dr. Calix provides compassionate, culturally sensitive therapy for individuals and couples, fostering growth, self-awareness, and resilience. She has held clinical positions with the San Diego County Mental Health Department of Forensic Services, and the State of California, in addition to an extensive background in outpatient clinical settings. She has served on the faculty of the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and also taught classes at San Diego State University and other colleges in the San Diego area.

She specializes in stress management, along with the treatment of mood disorders, depression, and ADHD, with a focus on women’s mental health issues, including postpartum disorders and other reproductive health issues. Other areas of expertise include treatment of relationship challenges, work stress, managing grief, trauma, and parenting concerns. Her primary treatment approach prioritizes promoting psychological health, wellness and resiliency. She focuses on trauma-informed care, relational empowerment, and evidence-based treatment approaches tailored to the unique stresses that women face. In particular, she assists young professionals in making major life transitions. She is passionate about helping women balance career and family demands while still prioritizing their own individual health and wellness. Other major focuses of therapy include helping clients avoid the traps of perfectionism, people-pleasing, and in moving past the ‘shoulds,’ that often lead to burn-out. Dr. Calix reflects a therapeutic style that emphasizes empathy, collaboration and creating a safe, supportive environment that allows clients to vent and find a compassionate space for healing. Her overall treatment approach emphasizes helping clients with practical coping skills, setting boundaries, and self-compassion. She assists clients dealing with the pressures of “having it all” and moving from a place of anxious overwhelm to calm confidence. Therapy is the first step towards nurturing one’s authentic self, improving self-esteem and moving towards a place of calm self-acceptance.

Dr. Calix takes an integrative and collaborative approach to treatment within a humanistic-existential framework. She tailors individualized treatment plans using evidence-based methods, including cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, solution-focused, mindfulness-based, and feminist-informed care.

A member of the American Psychological Association, California Psychological Association, and the San Diego Psychological Association, Dr. Calix remains dedicated to professional excellence.

Dr. Calix became a psychologist because of her strong belief in the resilience of women and the transformative power of being heard. She remains passionate about helping clients move from simply surviving to thriving. Her approach is warm and non-judgmental. As a woman, she understands the unique societal pressures and personal challenges women face. She provides a warm, collaborative place to understand patterns and themes and towards a place of empowerment.

Dr Christine is extremely thoughtful, intelligent and insightful. She has a passion for working with her clients and cares deeply about their outcomes. She asks good questions to help provoke thought and reflection. I've been seeing her for a few months now and I've progressed on my trauma associations, anxiety, grief, and working on my relationship with my partner. I've had a hard time doing art after experiencing multiple deaths in my family along with some PTSD. My body and mind have associated the two together so we've been working on deconstructing that association and bringing the positivity and joy back to art that I once had. Along with those issues, she's very supportive of women and the LGBTQIA+ community. Something I really like about Dr Christine is if she's unfamiliar with something as a concept or cultural nuance, she is curious, asks questions and wants to understand. She is very knowledgeable and intelligent, so she always has something to add to the conversation. She's a great pick if you want someone that is assertive while being understanding and able to hold a conversation. Thank you, Dr Christine!

2008 - is when I first met Dr. Christine Calix. After meeting with several therapist and psychologist, Dr. Christine Calix was the one both myself and my husband agreed would be my doctor. Fast forward 2022, I am still a patient of Dr. Calix and made the decision to continue my therapy with Dr. Calix even after over a decade! Living a balanced life being bipolar is my biggest challenge, although having the therapy I continuously have with Dr Calix has gotten me through some very depressive episodes as well as manic episodes too. She has helped me get care beyond hers when I had a turning point in my life where I needed to be hospitalized for a few days and regained balance once again so I can function at work as well as at home too. Every time I'm done with therapy during my session, I always feel confident that I have the tools and the thought process to continue being successful at home and at work with all that Dr. Calix has counseled me through. I am grateful for Dr. Calix!

A very gentle and thoughtful therapist. Very insightful. He asks questions that make you take a closer look at what is going on with you. I feel very safe expressing my thoughts with him. I've shared things with him, I have never shared with family or friends. I'm not sure what the comment meant about him only in it for the money. He's with a group of practitioners not in private practice. I doubt he really "rakes in the dough!"

I have been seeing Dr. Calix for the past 2 years. She is incredible! She's very knowledgeable and patient. She took the time to get to know me as a person and although she knew on day 1 what my condition was, she gave me the time to understand and accept it with no judgement. She also has an understanding of my culture and the impact it may have on my mental health. I am so grateful to have found her and have her help.
