Tammy Henderson, Therapist

Tammy Henderson, MA, LPC

Education and Experience:I completed a Master of Arts in the Clinical Mental Health program at Rowan University. I have been involved in the field of mental health for a number of years, more recently I completed a one-year long practicum with Center for Family Services, under the Services Empowering the Rights of Victims program. While there, I was responsible for completing comprehensive clinical assessments of our clients. Prior to that, I completed a legal clerkship in a jurisdiction within one of the nation’s heaviest caseloads and for a judge known for handling high-profile cases of national significance. I left there because I felt more and more compelled to pursue a degree in mental health counseling as it has always been my desire to help people heal. My experiences while employed, have allowed me to gain experience in responding to behavioral issues, in utilizing behavioral or cognitive interventions to assist individuals, and in assisting individuals with daily life problems. I have also acquired experience that fostered the development of skills in the following areas: rapport building, active listening, and insight into non-verbal cues. Furthermore, my positions allowed me to interact with diverse populations, thus increasing my expertise in the area of multiculturalism. My clinical interests entail therapy with adolescents, young adults, and adults experiencing various pathologies (from substance abuse and detox to personality disorders); however, at this point in my career, I am open to working with all populations and performing various services as I feel this will aid in my overall development as a mental health professional. The coursework I completed at Rowan has prepared me to effectively understand common ethical dilemmas, administer and comprehend certain assessments, and formulate diagnoses. My professors impressed upon me the importance of a thorough case conceptualization, appropriate use of theoretical orientations in conceptualizing and treatment planning, the importance of staying current with empirically validated and evidence-based treatments, and the role of flexibility in working with patients. Therapeutic Approaches:Including but not limited to: schema therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, the Twelve Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and interpersonal therapy. My background includes experience in conducting extensive research into pressing issues of national significance, analyzing statistical data and evaluating policies and procedures to ensure efficiency and optimal performance. In addition, my professional and personal pursuits have provided me numerous occasions to develop strategies and programs to increase diversity in higher education and professional employment, thereby, giving me the opportunity to work with diverse populations. My administrative expertise is complemented by an in-depth knowledge of social psychology, along with the ability to build trusted, mutually beneficial relationships. Indeed, handling past administrative issues while employed has further strengthened my skills in time management, multi-tasking, leadership, and communication. My accomplishments demonstrate the pride I take in my commitment to serve my community and those around me to the best of my ability. My experience in the energetic and demanding environment of law has fortified my ability to work under pressure, think on my feet, and provide skillful resolutions to various issues. Indeed, I bring to you focused and innovative analytical skills. When not working, I enjoy working out, reading books, engaging in debates, and volunteering.
