Understanding OCD in Children

Episode 213 Jan 26, 2026
Understanding OCD in Children

What’s normal childhood behavior—and what could be OCD? In this episode, we sit down with therapist Anthony Mason to unpack how obsessive-compulsive disorder shows up in kids. Together, we explore the early signs parents and caregivers should watch for, how childhood OCD differs from adult OCD, and the emotional toll it can take on a child’s everyday life at home, in school, and with friends.

Anthony also breaks down common myths about OCD and shares what truly helps—including why reassurance can sometimes make symptoms worse, how gradual exposure supports long-term progress, and the critical role families play in treatment. It’s a practical, compassionate conversation designed to help parents better understand, support, and advocate for children navigating OCD.

MEET THE GUEST

Anthony Mason, MSW, LCSW

Hello, If you're visiting this site, you or a loved one may be facing something difficult right now. I'm truly sorry you're going through this, and I admire your courage in seeking help. I earned my Master’s in Social Work in 2018, driven by a love of learning about people and my own journey with mental health. I spent five years as a school social worker before moving into private practice, where I’ve found the freedom to support clients in ways that truly fit their needs. I believe therapy works best when there's a strong, trusting relationship between client and therapist. I bring curiosity, humor, and a playful spirit — especially when working with kids. I believe my natural child-like attitude and my willingness to play are essential elements when working with youth. My ever-growing collection of games, toys, and fidgets helps make therapy engaging and comfortable. Outside of work, I love spending time with my family, hanging out with my dog, watching and reading all things nerdy, and building with Legos. If you're interested in a consultation, I’d love to connect. And if I’m not the right fit, I’m happy to help you find someone who is. Good luck on your journey, and I hope you find resolutions to the problems that you are facing.
