Kurt Richards, LMSW
Kurt completed his master’s degree in Social Work and clinical training at Wayne State University. Kurt has been providing outpatient counseling for 20 years within the Metro Detroit area. His specialties include treatment for trauma, co-dependency, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, severe mental health issues, relationship issues, couples and family counseling. His clients include adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
The therapeutic relationship begins with the first meeting between the client and the therapist. It’s extremely important for the client to feel comfortable and have trust that the therapist is genuinely concerned with the issues the client bring into the relationship. It takes courage for a client to begin therapy and I have an intuitive ability to support and validate those fears so that the client feels safe to continue to want to work on issues that brings them into therapy. Approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral therapy, strength based, person-centered, and solution focused therapy are the models that I use interactively. I find that many clients can come to a cognitive level of change but can be unprepared to follow through on the emotional level. It is a humbling experience to see clients make changes when the cognitive and emotional levels are congruent and work together harmoniously to overcome prior barriers to needed change.
