Ryan Blum, M.D. is a psychiatrist who works with adults of all ages in medication management and psychotherapy. He graduated from Harvard College and Yale School of Medicine and completed adult psychiatry residency at Yale in 2016. He has worked in a variety of public and private settings and taught students and residents at Yale, UCSF, and OHSU in Portland, Oregon where he currently lives and practices full time. He believes that good psychiatry involves building understanding in depth of who you are and how you developed into this person. He believes that the medical model of psychiatric illness can be helpful, but often falls short in explaining how symptoms and illness are playing a role in your life. Please note that Dr. Blum sees California residents via telemedicine only in the and his availability for individual psychotherapy is limited.

Spent almost 2 years with Dr. Ryan Blum. I've had people warn me that all psychiatrists just want to prescribe you medication and be done with it, but that hasn't been my experience with him at all. He's seen me through depressive states, heard out my bouts with anxiety, helped me work through so many of the emotional baggage I got from my parents (let's face it, we all have them), and has only ever patiently guided me through it all. With his help, I have been able to be more understanding of myself and have learned how to let go of the damaging need to be perfect at all times. If any of this sounds familiar or hits home, please make sure you speak to someone like Dr. Blum, who is legitimately qualified to hear out your thoughts. If you're like me, sitting alone with your thoughts can be paralyzing and worse, it can make you just spiral even if you present an excellent front on the outside.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this man. I have been in the mental health system (thru Kaiser) since I was about 15 years old. He is simply the best psychiatrist I have ever encountered. He is caring, kind, thorough and helped me sort through a wrong diagnosis. I felt he was the only doctor that ever really listened to me and got to know me. I will truly miss his presence here at Kaiser but know he will go on to do more fantastic (and live saving) work for others and it makes me happy to know there are REAL psychiatrists still out there. Thank you so much for everything Dr. Blum

Dr. Blum is a breath of fresh air at Kaiser Oakland. He is insightful, thoughtful, and considerate. He explained things in a way that did not insult my intelligence. His attitude was caring, and he connected me with resources both in and out of Kaiser that I could use to improve my mental AND physical health.

My Psych Doc is great. The convenience of video appointments works well. The platform needs some upgrades for efficiency and to reduce redundancy.
