Dr. Barkhauer is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Adult Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry. She completed her psychiatry residency training at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston, MA and a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. She completed a fellowship in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Dr. Barkhauer provides outpatient psychiatric medication management for adults 41 years and older, and treats a range of conditions including mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder), anxiety disorders (OCD, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorders, phobias), trauma/post-traumatic stress disorder, and psychotic disorders. Dr. Barkhauer also specializes in treating behavioral disturbances associated with major neurocognitive disorders, more commonly known as dementia.

I’ve been seeing Dr Checo for just over a year now. I was under the care of a psychiatrist in Texas for nearly 20 years before moving to Virginia a little over a year ago, and have to say I feel fortunate to have found Dr Checo so quickly. We meshed immediately! She is excellent at listening and advising, and prescribing the medication I need at my age! She had me weaned off an anxiety med I’d been on for years and I’ve had no ill effects from going off it. Excellent psychiatrist!!

Dr Checo is super! She truly takes the time and interest in solving problems like no one I've ever seen before. She is so easy to talk too, that she had my trust by the end of the first visit.You won't be disappointed.
