Dr. Laura Obert is a Psychologist in Ohio who has been practicing since 2012. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Auburn University. Dr. Obert specializes in working with the LGBTQ+ population and their families. As a member of this community who was also trained specifically in working with this community, Dr. Obert believes she has both a personal and professional understanding of the various factors that uniquely affect the LGBTQ+ population. This includes navigating the coming out process to self and others as well as helping those who have family members, children or partners who identify as LGBTQ+ and would like some support navigating this part of life. Dr. Obert provides help in the transition process from both a practical standpoint (letters of support or referrals for trans+ friendly healthcare and/or medical transition) and an emotional standpoint (therapy, integration of identity, etc.). Over the past decade she has also worked more extensively with LGBTQ+ families who are or who wish to become parents and how to negotiate through the unique challenges this involves (fertility treatments, donor issues, etc.). Some of Dr. Obert’s favorite ways to spend her time outside of work is with three small children playing outside, playing games, doing some kind of art, or reading together. You can regularly find her doing yoga in the mornings before the rest of the house wakes up. After that it’s usually a cup of coffee while reading something interesting (to her anyway). She’s always up for a good book suggestion! She makes a point to volunteer at her kids’ schools whether that is in the classroom, the cafeteria, or coaching their sports teams. Her favorite things in her life are the people in it. So, any chance she gets she tries to catch up with her family.
