Susan Rowland, Psychologist

Susan Rowland, PhD, PsyD

Susan J. Rowland, PhD, RN Susan J. Rowland is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Registered Nurse in Ohio who has been practicing since 2008. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Ohio State University in 1985 and enjoyed a 30-year career in Oncology and Intensive Care in Cincinnati, Ohio. She received her Master of Arts in Psychology from Xavier University in 1997 and completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology from The Union Institute and University in 2007 with a major area of study in cognitive behavior therapy, psycho-oncology, and thanatology. Susan believes that everyone has a different story that is relatable in some way. Her goal is to understand an individual’s mental, emotional, and spiritual needs (spiritual if desired) that influence their particular challenges and partner with them to develop a unique treatment plan that will get them on their way to increased self-directed living. It is important to Susan that her patients define their own goals for finding meaning and purpose in their lives. Her job is then to blend evidence-based practices like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) with psychoeducation to help them achieve their treatment plan goals. Susan also believes that treating the whole person, body, mind, and spirit addresses a number of intersecting issues that hold us back from being our best selves. As a nurse for 30 years, she also has a deep appreciation for the role that the body plays in both our challenges and in either helping or hindering our progress toward what we want and need. Thus, if a patient desires, wellness is incorporated into their treatment plan with education on weight loss, proper diet, exercise and fitness, sleep hygiene, and the activity of daily living skills that promote optimal health. Treating the emotional pain that one’s mind is capable of is the foundation for success in all other areas of a whole person. Susan actually believes that emotional pain comes from a very deep hurt place in our hearts. Through individual or group therapy, with the latest evidenced-based treatment modalities, patients acquire insight into their unique challenges, develop their own unique goals, then learn the healthy coping skills required to help them to manage their feelings rather than react to them, or suppress them altogether. Another optional area, if desired, is helping patients to strengthen their connection with others, nature, and their faith. Helping an individual create or strengthen a healthy support system is part of what it takes to lay the foundation with which to move forward. Susan feels it is her honor to assist individuals in addressing their deepest challenges, improve their health and wellness, and strive to reach their full potential and be the best version of themselves they can imagine. In her spare time, Susan enjoys backpacking, kayaking, dachshund rescue and dog training, website development and graphic design, organic gardening, gourmet cooking, and season tickets to the symphony, ballet, and opera.
