Dr. Paul Van Zeumeren is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California who has been practicing since 2012. Dr. Paul uses the systems approach to inform individuals how familial experiences may be affecting current relationships and outlooks. He holds a PsyD in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Family Systems/Dynamics. He held a C.A.T.C., which is a certified addiction treatment counselor while working towards his licensure and degrees, so he is a specialist in recovery from substance use disorders. Dr. Paul’s counseling style is pretty laid-back.

As an Adlerian oriented, psychodynamic therapist, he would say that he is a big believer in psychoeducation and has a good sense of humor. Dr. Paul is also compassionate and believes that good mental health is an action-oriented undertaking. He likes to focus on identifying your strengths and helping you to maximize them to overcome your obstacles. Having recently moved from Southern California to Northern California, Dr. Paul has adjusted some of his hobbies and interests. He grew up in a surfing-oriented community and that was a lifelong passion that he thought he could transition to his new place of residence. However, the water and climate are just too cold for him.

Nonetheless, he has adapted, which is essentially what good mental health is; the ability to adapt, so he definitely wants to practice what he preaches, so to speak. He enjoys walks in the forest, as he lives in the redwoods, as well as fishing in the harbor. He is very interested in watching professional sports, mainly the NFL and NHL, but is known to root on the Dutch (Holland) National football/soccer team when they are in action, given his father’s heritage. Of course, he couldn’t have completed a Doctorate degree without a passion for reading, so he tries to stay up to date with the emerging perspectives in his field.
