All people struggle. All people have unique experiences and make choices. All people experience pain, fear, and loss. All people deserve safety and loving kindness. All people are capable of growth and learning. All people have inherent goodness. Emily D’Auria believes strongly that the universality of human experience shows us we all have more in common than not. In periods of suffering and struggle, individuals may feel alone and unreachable. By fostering therapeutic connection rooted in warmth and safety, Emily works to facilitate an individual’s ability to come back to their true selves. From there, drawing on a vast range of modalities, theories, and experiences, Emily works actively and intentionally with clients to conceptualize and address their therapeutic goals. Emily is experienced in treating anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, posttraumatic stress and other trauma-related disorders, relationship issues, and more. While so many human experiences don’t fit into a diagnostic category, Emily strongly believes that counseling can help individuals understand, cope, shift, change, accept, and progress. The seasons of our lives may bring intense challenges, or we may struggle with ongoing patterns of self-limitation. Whatever an individual may bring to therapy, Emily demonstrates openness, patience, and compassion in assessing the landscape and identifying the changes a person wants to see and feel in their life. Emily has worked in a number of mental health settings, including the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Counseling Service Unit, where she provided culturally competent therapy to first responders and their families. Emily has also worked on inpatient psychiatric units providing therapy to patients with varying levels of functioning, and in higher education providing academic advisement, instruction, and support as part of university faculty. She has a special interest in working with first responders and Veterans processing and integrating traumatic experiences, as well as college students and young adults managing issues related to education and identity. Emily utilizes a trauma-informed and holistic approach to mental health and wellness, drawing from a diverse range of theories including psychodynamic, humanistic, emotionally-focused, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, and frequently integrating mindfulness, creative arts, movement, and nervous system regulation techniques.
