Derek Cooper, LMHC helps individuals navigate life’s complexities by fostering self-awareness, resilience, and healing. Serving patients across Washington, Derek supports adolescents, teens, and adults through evidence-based mental health treatment tailored to each person’s lived experience. Whether facing persistent anxiety, mood instability, or the impact of trauma, clients working with Derek can expect a therapy experience grounded in collaboration, compassion, and clinical expertise.

Derek has extensive experience working with anxiety disorders, substance use, and trauma-related concerns. His approach integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness practices, allowing clients to manage distress more effectively and make meaningful changes in their lives. He is especially skilled in helping individuals who struggle with addictive behaviors or have difficulty regulating emotions, guiding them toward greater stability and self-control. A central focus of Derek’s work includes treating PTSD/trauma, substance use disorders, and alcohol and drug-related issues. He is deeply passionate about supporting individuals through recovery, whether they are navigating early sobriety or working through long-standing patterns of avoidance or shame. He creates a space where clients can explore their experiences without judgment and build healthier relationships with themselves and others. Derek proudly serves a diverse clientele, including members of the LGBTQ+ and military/veteran communities, bringing cultural humility and authenticity to the therapeutic relationship. He sees therapy as a dynamic partnership—one where every person’s voice, story, and identity is honored. Outside of therapy, Derek is an avid hiker, sports enthusiast, and music lover—passions that help him stay grounded and balanced. He enjoys collecting vinyl records, attending live concerts, and diving into fiction and novels during his downtime.

See what our patients are saying about Derek Cooper

I am a patient with LifeStance Health. I started seeing Derek virtually for therapy/counseling. Derek specializes in making you comfortable. When a good relationship has been established he is not afraid to speak his mind for your health and safety, but he also views your points and understands. He takes the time to hear you out and respond with care and explain "the how" and "the why" instead of skipping straight to "the should". If interested he gives good material and keeps you engaged with activities for you to keep on. He is also fun to theorize with and has a good sense of humor. He is never too too pushy and has a good gauge for that. Overall, he is immensely helpful I am blessed to have come across Derek I look forward to working with him more. Thank you.
