Mental Health America’s (MHA) 2025 report ranks all 50 states and the District of Columbia on youth mental health, measuring both prevalence of mental illness and access to care. Rankings vary widely across the country, and even in the highest-ranked states, more than 15% of young people ages 12 to 17 experienced a major depressive episode in the past year.
For many parents, that figure reflects something they’ve already been paying attention to at home. Teenagers today are navigating a different set of pressures than previous generations, and the data offers some context for why.
