Kenneth W. Gilstein, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist, with a subspecialty in neuropsychology, and an expertise in mild Traumatic Brain Injuries. He graduated from Cornell University, with a major in neurobiology and behavior, and obtained a Ph.D. from Utah State University, majoring in Professional Scientific Psychology (a combination of clinical, counseling and school psychology). In 2003 he received an award from the Connecticut Psychological Association for ?Distinguished Contribution to the Science of Psychology? for his work in mild traumatic brain injury. Dr. Gilstein has had over 40 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults, families and couples, both doing therapy and psychological evaluations, including ADHD and learning disabilities. He also specializes in family and marital therapy. During the last 25 years, Dr. Gilstein has spent a great deal of his professional life evaluating and treating individuals with mild Traumatic Brain Injuries and Sports Concussions. He has studied, and done research, with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Sports Concussion Program, and with some of the leading professionals in the field of mild Traumatic Brain Injury. This has led Dr. Gilstein to be involved in litigation, doing numerous depositions and court appearances. Dr. Gilstein has presented workshops in mild Traumatic Brain Injuries and Sports Concussions in various states, and internationally. Before coming to Spectrum, Dr. Gilstein worked as a clinical psychologist and psychological examiner at the Mokihana Program on Kauai, HI. The Mokihana Program is unique in that clinical psychologists are placed at specific schools, where they have their office, and work directly with the school population. He was involved in doing individual and family therapy, school consultations, and psychological, cognitive, and neuropsychological evaluations with children as young as 2 ½ years of age, adolescents, and their families. At the same time, he kept a part-time private practice in psychotherapy, Disability Evaluations for the state of Hawaii, and neuropsychological evaluations for the V.A. on Kauai, and for the general public of the island. Dr. Gilstein is an avid lacrosse fan, having played lacrosse at Cornell University. Since 1969 he has coached lacrosse at both the college and youth levels. Originally from New York, he has lived in the Bowie area since 2015.
