Devin Cain, MA, LCPC
Specializes In:
My name is Devin Cain, LCPC. I completed my Master’s in Mental Health Counseling with a specialty in Health and Behavioral Medicine in 2016 at William James College in Newton, MA. Before going to school in Massachusetts, I grew up in Southern Maine and completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Maine, Orono. I returned to Maine in 2016 to start working as an Integrated Behavioral Health Clinician at the Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) Bariatric Surgery program. My work in the bariatric program has introduced me to clients with many different physical health complications such as obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, GI problems, and sleep disorders. My work in this program has also introduced me to clients with many different mental health diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, body image issues, eating disorders, grief, adjusting to major life changes, and relationship issues. My experience has helped me to become a client centered clinician, seeing a person as a whole, and supporting you towards improved physical and mental health, while also helping to improve client support systems outside of individual counseling. I have worked closely with Surgeons, PCPs, office and hospital medical staff, Dietitians, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and other Mental Health Clinicians. I have experience supporting clients towards their goals using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing, using mindfulness and relaxation techniques in my practice quite often. I also have counseling experience in other specialty offices such as Cardiology and Oncology. While my counseling experience and expertise is working with adults, I have some experience working with children and families in a case management setting. I worked in a Pediatric Primary Care office as an Integrated Case Manager. Although, I no longer do case management on a regular basis, my time in this office helped me to understand support systems throughout Maine. I’m familiar with and comfortable making referrals for clients and linking people who may need other supports outside of individual counseling. Common referrals/links include: finding a PCP, finding a support group, finding a psychiatrist, learning about community supports such as food pantries or free legal counsel, or getting connected to more permanent case management. I’m a certified My Hungry head Educator. This is a six session working course helping clients to better understand their relationship with food and how to make improvements. Running My Hungry Head groups is where my years of group experience comes from. I’m also certified in Smoking Cessation Counseling. I was first certified in Massachusetts through FrestStart and when I moved to Maine I completed Smoking Cessation trainings through MaineHealth. Much of my experience in improving relationships with food and nicotine has also led me to helping clients with controlling other substances or managing behavioral addictions, however I’m not a certified addictions counselor. Personally, I love living in Maine! I enjoy my free time reading on the beach, spending time with family and friends playing lawn games, and camping. My family and friends are very important to me. I also like to swim, spin, rollerblade, watch scary movies, play cribbage, and play video games. Types of service I offer: talk therapy using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. Supporting patients in practicing mindfulness, behavior change, and relaxation techniques to improve overall mental health. What I specialize in: Health psychology. Using counseling techniques to help patients reach their health goals and work towards healthy behavioral changes (weight loss, changing dietary/lifestyle behaviors, quitting smoking) as well as supporting patients whose health has recently changed or are concerned about their health (emotional support, processing grief). Depression, anxiety, eating disorders. Locations where I practice (if the offices where you will be practicing is known at the time of hire) Portland, Maine Patient ages I work with: Adults ages 18 to 65 years old
