Many of us feel overwhelmed with demands of work, health issues, family life, financial pressures and ask- “Where is the space for self-care?” Maladaptive coping skills (addictive behaviors, substance use issues, avoidance of activities) can easily take the place of healthy self-care techniques. However, there is a healthier path to walk down, which I can help you to master. I have spent my career helping teenagers and adults cope with difficult behavior patterns, and I can attest that once the source is uncovered, these behaviors can be changed to more accurately reflect your authentic self (artistic, creative, social, etc). I use Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to treat mood disorders, addictive behaviors and codependency.

I am also well versed in treating chronic pain and health issues. I work in individual and group treatment modalities. am certified in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Mindfulness-Based Self-Compassion (MSC) and versed in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). As a creative in the Los Angeles community, I also use poetry and music to encourage more mindful participation in the world around us. As a psychologist, I can provide cognitive, psychological and personality testing to help differentiate between conditions that have similar symptoms but different treatments.

This has the makings of a lengthy review, so I’ll get right to the point—Dr. Rachael Polokoff is an extraordinary therapist. She is very kind, very smart, and extremely insightful, and someone who has patiently helped me work on and improve every facet of my life. A little over a year ago, I suffered a severe injury to my elbow and, along with managing the physical pain, was unable to run, hike, really do anything in the realm of physical activity. During the time sequestered and oftentimes alone, old shadows started to creep back in, and I found myself dealing with feelings of depression that I had once put behind me, or so I thought. Since then, Dr. Polokoff has been integral in not only helping me move past my depression but in improving my relationships: how to openly and honestly communicate with the people in my life, how to reach common ground; in helping with my career: how to navigate work stress, disarm conflict, and better define the meaning and purpose of work in my life; and in understanding myself: how I make meaning of the world around me, how to listen to and trust myself, how to look at the bigger picture without anxiety, and how to recognize and challenge cognitive distortions and negative self talk… just to name a few. And how has she done this? Well, with a lot knowledge, expertise, and general kindness and understanding. Whenever I ask for more evidence or help in a particular area, she readily sends me links to articles as well as recommends books that I might find constructive. Discussions following are always fruitful and always two-sided. If I tell her a book was helpful but not exactly what I was looking for, she listens and factors my feedback into future recommendations and conversations during sessions. As well, she employs a myriad of strategies during our sessions, from Gestalt therapy techniques (such as how to have tough conversations) to handouts (such as helping with procrastination and unhealthy thought patterns), as well as something called a relationship inventory, which turned out to be not only fun but very insightful. Finally, not oversell it but Dr. Polokoff has afforded me many ah ha moments along the way—observations she makes that leave me nearly speechless and that I ponder on long after our session. Overall, I’ve come to be amazed at how much of our lives is actually within our control. Good therapists can help us see that, exceptional therapists like Dr. Polokoff not only help us see this but go beyond and help us to better become the person we want to be.
