Psychologist and Therapist in Manchester, New Hampshire Edgar Hartford, PsyD

Edgar Hartford, PsyD

My name is Edgar Hartford, and I am a licensed Psychologist in the State of NH. I began my career in human services in 2005 as a Juvenile Probation and Parole Officer (JPPO), working with at risk youth in the city of Manchester. Following my work in law enforcement, I began work in mental health counseling and therapy, as a student adjustment counselor and clinical director for a residential treatment program in northern NH. Concurrent to these professional advancements I also continued to work on my education earning my Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling and Doctoral Degree in Counseling and School Psychology from Rivier University. Additionally, while completing graduate training, I had the fortunate opportunity to complete professional experiences at Rivier Universities Counseling Center, The Pine Haven Boys Group Home, The Youth Development Center, the LUK Crisis Center and within the Claremont School District as their school psychologist. Throughout this experience I have adopted a unique understanding of the complexities that can influence a persons psychological functioning.

My clinical approach utilizes Cognitive Behavioral interventions through a Humanistic, Client Centered lens that is rooted in the development of deep and meaningful interpersonal connection, transparency and honesty. I seek to develop a genuine relationship with my patients, allowing them to take an introspective look at themselves, their history and the context that it created. I believe that this allows a person to more fully understand how they think, feel and react currently, and provides powerful tools that can help shape more adaptive functioning in a meaningful way. In addition to this framework, I also have experience and utilize strategies from various other modalities including: Motivational Interviewing, ARC (Attunement, Regulation and Competency), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I have found my approach to be effective when treating a range of populations from adolescents to adults, individuals, couples and families, all of which I am open to treat. I currently see patients within my practice ages 10 – 65+ with a variety of diagnostic needs, including PTSD, gender identity/dysphoria, depression, anxiety, bipolar, neurological disorder, substance abuse, couples/marital difficulties, parenting and behavioral and developmental challenges that come with it. The psychological impact that these disorders can have on functioning can be profound, and often education, therapy and support can be significant within recovery. I seek to provide these services within the therapeutic setting, promoting the development of skills that extend beyond the therapy office.
