“I knew if I stayed where I was, nothing would get better. Nothing would change. If I wanted to ease the pain, I had to try something different.” ~Sharon E Rainey.

I am committed to being authentic with clients, to actively listen to their concerns/feelings, and to be sensitive to their level of readiness to try something different. It is my hope that I offer a space where they feel safe to share/process emotions as well as feel supported in making changes which improve their physical, mental, and emotional health. Therapy is a conversation and a collaboration, and I am guided by the goals of and what is important to the client. I value using language which is accessible and not filled with clinical terms that feel distant or confusing.

Therapy can, at times, be uncomfortable, and it should never be overwhelming or traumatic. I ask questions that challenge, and I understand that style isn’t right for everyone. Having a “good fit” with your therapist is vital to the process. It’s true when therapists say, “the client is the expert.” My role is to ride alongside them, not drive the car. I offer genuine feedback, and I am open to and welcome feedback in return.

Over the years, my clients have taught me a great deal. Change is difficult at every stage of life. Young people are smarter and notice more than they are given credit. Forcing or pressuring anyone to attend or participate in therapy is less effective than allowing the person to share willingly.

Showing vulnerability takes courage, and clients might feel an unspoken pressure to open up right away. Life happens, and it is ok when they need more time to sort it out. I am ready to tackle those speed bumps with my clients. Trust develops over time, and I am willing to wait.
