All of us have days or weeks when we feel low and down on ourselves. We’re hit by a bad mood, heavy energy, and negative self-talk. We get stuck in sticky thought loops, unpleasant emotions, and negative self-beliefs. We start to get frustrated and wonder, What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I get out of this?
Whenever I start to enter this downward spiral, of feeling bad and feeling bad about feeling bad, I try the usual tactics you’re supposed to do to shake it off: A brisk walk, mindfulness, journaling, self-compassion. (And the things you’re not supposed to: Pushing it away, distraction, scrolling, snacks.) But there are some days when there’s only one thing that will work to pull me out of it: A dip in freezing cold water, also known as a cold plunge.
