Urine Test for Autism: How a New Study Could Help Diagnose Children
Over the past 20 years, autism diagnoses have increased by about 300% in the United States. Spotting the developmental disorder sooner, rather than later, can mean better treatment options and improved outcomes for children and their families. Yet diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) accurately, and as early as possible, remains one of the most stubborn challenges in pediatric mental health. A recent study from researchers at Arizona State University points to a different screening idea: a urine test that, in their research sample, identified children with autism with about 90% accuracy. The Challenge of Accurate, Early Autism Diagnosis Autism prevalence has climbed steadily for two decades. The most recent surveillance data from the CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network estimates that roughly 1 in 31 children in the United States has autism, up from 1 in 36 just two years earlier. Gender-Affirming Care: The Impact of Parental Rejection on Transgender Youth When Support Falls Short

This content has been updated from the previous article published on September 19, 2024. Vivian Jenna Wilson, the transgender daughter of Elon Musk, has publicly confronted her father over his comments about her childhood and gender transition. In an interview with Jordan Peterson, Musk claimed he was “tricked” into approving gender-affirming care for Vivian Jenna at 16 and said he had subsequently “lost” his son, labeling gender-reassignment surgery as “child mutilation and sterilization.” Wilson, who was legally granted a name and gender change at age 18 on June 22, 2022, responded that she no longer wants a relationship with her father, saying “I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form.” Most recently, in June 2026, after Vivian appeared in Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty Pride campaign , Musk appeared to endorse, via his X account, a claim that his daughter’s transition was linked to his political engagement and Twitter purchase, but did not state this himself. This ongoing and public dispute serves as a real-world example of how parental rejection and misunderstanding over gender-affirming care can impact transgender youth....

Somatic Shaking Is Trending: Here’s How It Fits Into Somatic Exercises

This content has been updated from the previous article on May 8, 2024. Somatic shaking has recently gained attention online, with many people sharing videos of rhythmic tremoring or gentle bouncing movements as a way to address trauma and stress-related issues. While the term may feel new, the practice itself is not. Shaking and tremoring movements have been used for decades within somatic therapy and trauma-informed approaches as one method of supporting nervous system regulation. At its core, somatic work focuses on the connection between the mind and body. Somatic exercises, including grounding, breathwork, slow movement, and sometimes gentle shaking, are designed to increase body awareness and help reduce muscular tension associated with stress. While somatic therapy is best administered in office by a licensed professional, there are some exercises that can be used at home in between sessions. What are Somatic Exercises?...

Can Running Treat Depression?

This content has been updated from the previous article published on December 20, 2023. According to recent U.S. data, depression remains at historically high levels, with about 18.3% of adults, nearly 48 million people, currently experiencing or being treated for depression. At the same time, approximately 11.4% of U.S. adults take medication for depression, highlighting the widespread impact of the condition and the range of treatment approaches people use. A common depression treatment approach is a combination of therapy, typically cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and depression medication such as antidepressants. In recent years, however, we have seen an increase in holistic or non-medication treatment approaches to depression. Among these, running and other forms of exercise have received significant attention. This has led many people to ask: Is exercising, running specifically, as successful in treating depression as therapy or medication? How does running really measure up against the long-standing pillars of psychiatric treatment? Here’s what the latest research shows....

Mental Health Benefits of Being a Sports Fan

Every February, tens of millions of Americans crowd into living rooms, sports bars, and stadium watch parties for the Super Bowl. And for a few hours, complete strangers hug, shout, and groan in unison over the same play. The same thing happens during March Madness, the NBA Finals, and the World Series, when a city or a whole country briefly turns into one giant party. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup arriving on home soil this summer, that collective roar is about to get even louder. It raises a question worth taking seriously: Can rooting for a team actually be good for you? A growing body of research suggests the answer is often yes, and that the mental health benefits of being a sports fan may run deeper than a fun night out. Watching sports can light up the brain’s reward system, ease loneliness, and build social connection. So before the next big match, it might be worth considering what fandom is doing for your mind (results not guaranteed if they lose). Can Watching Sports Make You Happier?...

Hyperfixation and Neurodivergence: Exploring Its Role in ADHD, Autism, and Beyond

Losing hours to a single activity, forgetting to eat, finding it genuinely difficult to stop, these are not signs of enthusiasm. For many people with neurodivergent conditions such as ADHD or autism, they are the hallmarks of hyperfixation, a distinctive pattern of attention that is as misunderstood as it is common. What Is Hyperfixation? Hyperfixation refers to a state of intense, sustained, and often involuntary focus on a specific interest, activity, or subject. It goes well beyond ordinary enthusiasm or even deep concentration. Where most people can engage fully with a task and still disengage when circumstances require it, hyperfixation is characterized by an absorption that resists interruption, sometimes regardless of the individual’s own intention to stop. The term appears across several overlapping contexts and is sometimes used interchangeably with related concepts, each capturing a slightly different dime...
