Nicholas Shilney, LCPC, helps teens, adults, and seniors across Illinois navigate life’s most difficult emotional and behavioral challenges with a thoughtful, personal, and evidence-based approach. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor at LifeStance Health, he provides individual therapy for those experiencing anxiety, depression, and trauma, creating a supportive space where clients can build resilience, improve coping skills, and move toward meaningful change. With his previous experiences working in higher level of care such as Residential, PHP, and IOP, he has a wide variety of approaches that he individualizes for each person he works with.

Some of Nick’s preferred approaches include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Radically Open Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (RO-DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). His work is grounded in helping individuals build compassionate awareness of their experiences while developing practical tools/strategies for long-term mental wellness. He works with clients facing concerns such as dysregulated mood, perfectionism, PTSD/trauma, ADHD, alcohol and drug use issues, while also addressing related life challenges. He serves diverse populations, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, neurodivergent folks, and military/veterans.  Nicholas brings a compassionate, relational presence to therapy. Outside of his clinical work, he enjoys playing video games, attending music shows and festivals, and finding the best pizza restaurants in Chicago.

He is very friendly and professional - I found it extremely easy to open up to him about my ADHD. Unlike some other psychiatrists I have tried, he has a "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" kind of mentality that is honestly quite refreshing. That is, if you have been stable on your medications for awhile, he won't try to change everything. Only issue is scheduling - he is generally booked a month or two out. My advice: when you see him for an appointment, schedule the next one while you're there.

Dr. Shea is the best psychiatrist that I have ever worked with. Out of the all of the psychiatrists that I've ever worked with, he's the only one that actually takes a full session to check in on how you're doing. Other psychiatrists that I've worked with basically run a prescription mill, meaning you go in and go out in a matter of minutes and make you feel like you are wasting their time if you take more than a few minutes to do your check-in.

We saw Dr Shea in his Winfield office and could not continue care with him when he moved his office to Chicago. He is an excellent Doctor, a good listener and is very compassionate. We would highly recommend him.
