Katie Avery, MFT-A

Katie Avery is a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate in Oregon who has been practicing since 2020. She has a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Capella University and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from University of Oregon. Katie has worked with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families in various environments to include residential, community mental health, and inpatient crisis treatment. She has worked with adults with traumatic brain injuries, severe persistent mental illness, special needs populations, and wide socioeconomic and culturally diverse backgrounds. Katie’s goal is to create a safe, nonjudgmental healing space and collaborate with you to achieving your desired outcome. She firmly believes a client’s internal knowledge, strength, and commitment to change is what ultimately holds power. Katie utilizes an integrative approach in therapy including emotion-focused, humanistic, solution-focused, and trauma-informed therapy. Katie believes the family system, both past and present, holds great significance in influencing our lives as children, adolescents, and adults. We hurt in relationships, and we heal in relationships. In her work with individuals, they can explore one’s strengths and challenges in the context of relationships. A transformation can begin by becoming self-aware and taking responsibility of current relational, behavioral, and thinking patterns that often stem from oppressed and dysfunctional systems and traumatic experiences. Working with families, Katie can help by focusing on identifying and changing maladaptive patterns of interactions that are keeping families stuck and hurting. Her goal is to help family members learn to better care and nurture one another by making necessary changes to improve the entire system. With couples, Katie works from an emotionally focused model drawing on attachment theory. She can help to interrupt negative interactive cycles, re-establish more positive bonding between partners, and develop a deeper understanding to one’s emotions driving these patterns. With children and adolescents, Katie incorporates play therapy, therapeutic art and games, and sand tray therapy. Outside of work, Katie enjoys the many outdoor activities the PNW has to offer including hiking, swimming, and camping. She enjoys going to concerts, reading thriller and romance novels, and cooking. She is a huge cat lover and Oregon Ducks football fan!
