Neil Poirier-Westman, LCPC

Hello, my name is Neil Poirier-Westman, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. I have experience working with clients across the lifespan. While completing my master’s in clinical mental health counseling from Antioch University New England, I worked with young adults in a college campus setting. There my work focused on treating students mainly with anxiety and family-of-origin issues. After completing my degree, I went on to work for a community mental health agency providing counseling in schools, out-patient clinics, and homes to students ages 5 to 18. In this setting I treated clients with a variety of mental health issues including ADD/ADHD, attachment disorders and substance use. In addition to providing individual counseling to these students, I also provided family therapy and individual counseling with adults when needed. Most recently I worked as an outpatient readjustment counselor for the Department of Veterans Affairs focused primarily on clients with combat-related PTSD, issues related to moral injury, and Military Sexual Trauma (MST). In this setting, I mainly utilized Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Trauma-informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Adaptive Disclosure treatment modalities. I also facilitated multiple Vietnam era veteran process groups focused on stage-of-life, medical, family, and race issues. Also in this setting, I had the opportunity to work with veterans in the LGBTQ+ community. I am also an Army veteran and spent 18 months deployed to combat zones. My counseling approach is based on the formation of a strong therapeutic alliance. To that end, I work to learn about a client’s values, personality and their dreams to help establish a sense of confidence in my ability to truly understand their essence and what they hope to get out of their clinical work. My goal is for the alliance to give a feeling of congruity, of being in-step side-by-side, as we move towards therapeutic goals. As part of making this work, I invite clients to give feedback about what is working and what may need to be modified.
