Specializes In:
“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” – Dr. Seuss Since the beginning of her career in 1997, Cheryl has been passionately dedicated to treating clients with mental and/or health and substance abuse concerns, and has been supervising both Residents in Counseling and fully licensed clinicians since March 2015 (Cheryl is an approved supervisor in the State of Virginia). Cheryl’s clinical experience includes working in a co-ed 28 day program for dually diagnosed individuals, providing case management to seriously mentally ill adults, serving for 14 years at Loudoun County CSB as a group/individual therapist to dually diagnosed adults, holding a supervisory position and starting/maintaining an IOP program for men at Prince William CSB for four years, and further developing her clinical experience at INOVA Behavioral Health for three years, where she engaged adults and couples who presented with a wide variety of clinical presentations in an outpatient therapy office setting. Cheryl’s therapeutic style is driven and centralized by her inherent value and belief that each person who comes to the therapy room is a unique individual with his, her, or their own personality traits, nuances, and set of strengths. With Cheryl, you can expect a non-judgmental, genuine welcome from the first session, striving to cultivate curiosity, initial goal-setting, and of course, to establish the main ingredient necessary for any therapeutic relationship: trust – which is a process and not an event. With her professional and personal values as a central focal point, Cheryl utilizes her seasoned experience to provide a wide span of therapeutic interventions, to include person-centered, strengths-based, solution-focused, Positive Psychology, cognitive behavioral (CBT), dialectical behavioral (DBT), trauma informed (to include polyvagal), acceptance and commitment (ACT), motivational interviewing, and IMAGO therapy for couples. Together, you and Cheryl can decide which technique, or combination of techniques will most effectively assist you through your own specific set of symptoms and circumstances which you are bringing to the table. Through a solid therapeutic partnership, you can gain the steps and confidence necessary to become a more whole individual. Throughout her career and currently, Cheryl’s passion is to serve those with a history of trauma/PTSD, substance use and abuse, anxiety, depression/mood concerns, ADHD, and emotional issues related to physical health challenges (including pre and post bariatric surgery). She is a strong advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, and has provided support for those in the various stages of hormonal and/or surgical gender reassignment. Due to Cheryl’s experience, scope of practice and expertise, she currently serves clients here at ACG who are 18 or older (with no upper age limit), and will consider working with clients who are 15 to 17 on a case-by-case basis. Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have. Cheryl looks forward to meeting you, and to the honor of being a guide on your path to wellness of body, mind, and spirit.
