Psychiatrist in Overland Park, Kansas Ethan E. Bickelhaupt, MD

Ethan E. Bickelhaupt, MD

Ethan E. Bickelhaupt is a Psychiatrist in Kansas who has been practicing since 1982. Ethan grew up on a farm in Idaho, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Zoology from The College of Idaho and obtained an MD degree from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1978. He completed a four-year residency at the Menninger School of Psychiatry in Topeka, KS (now at Baylor in Houston, TX) in 1982. Because of U.S. Public Health Service scholarship obligations, Ethan opened a general family practice in a small town in rural Kansas, where he practiced for 12 years, while simultaneously doing psychiatric consultations at the two regional hospitals. Following this, Ethan limited his practice to psychiatry, with board-certified sub-specialties in general psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, addiction medicine, pain medicine, and forensics. At its peak, this solo-physician practice included 26 employees, of which seven were APRNs, three RNs, and other professionals and support staff. Due to economic pressures from reimbursement declines and overhead costs, the practice closed in 2006, after which Ethan continued in academic medicine at the VA Hospital in Topeka, KS, where he had begun to consult in 2004, working on acute and geriatric psychiatry units. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Kansas and University of Missouri Schools of Medicine, supervising Residents at the VA in their specialty training programs. Ethan went to Chicago for personal addiction treatment in 2007, where he stayed until 2014, working as a Program Specialist in an addiction treatment program and as the practice manager for an internist in private practice. He had completed a Master of Medical Management (MMM, a type of MBA) at USC in 2010. In 2014, he returned to Kansas to live with his long-term partner, Jeffrey, an APRN. In 2015, he began work as the Director of Behavioral Health for addiction treatment at the Parkdale Center for Professionals, in Chesterton, IN, in 2015. He then joined the Osawatomie State Hospital in 2017. He became the Chair of the Medical Staff and the Supervisor of Residents in Psychiatry from the KU School of Medicine. He served on the Governor’s Behavioral Health Advisory Council, as its mental health representative, and on its sub-committee for addictions. Following that Ethan has practiced outpatient psychiatry at Clinical Associates in Lenexa, Kansas, treating pre-adolescents, adolescents, adults, and seniors. His special interest is the integration of addiction issues into mental health treatment, with a focus on complex psychiatric presentations. Outside of work, Ethan loves movies, eating out, and travel.
