Katie Eilers, LMFT
I believe that there is a story people tell about themselves. Sometimes, parts of the story can be problematic or leave a person feeling stuck. I use language as a tool to find ways to get unstuck. I feel that language is a powerful tool because it creates meaning and the reality which we live in. I believe that successful change involves both the therapist and client working collaboratively to generate new possibilities and a new story that illustrates their preferred way of living! I understand that there is risk and uncertainty in this process, which is why I make sure to provide a warm and open environment for exploration. I truly believe that the client is the expert of their own life and is the one moving forward with hope and making positive changes for themselves.
I can help by holding space for the client. Together we can explore what isn’t working in their life and create a new narrative that does work. A Greek philosopher has been quoted saying “the only constant in life is change”. I’ve always admired this quote because it is just so true. Some of my specialties include working with adolescents, anxiety, and life transitions. A life transition can be a difficult season, with necessary periods of adjustment. I believe that I can help in making these transitions smooth and developing coping skills for current and future life transitions as well.
I practice humility, respect, and curiosity in the room with clients. I believe these qualities impact the ways in which I understand client’s problems and help us identify the most ideal avenues for change to take place. I am non-judgmental and genuinely care about the client and what is going on in their life. I value client’s experience and knowledge, and understand that their reality is not any more or less important than my own. I practice self-awareness frequently and am always examining my own biases and assumptions, which I feel greatly helps us open up possibilities for conversations and change.
